Even though diamond painting is a fairly simple and self-explanatory activity, it is completely normal for it to be unfamiliar and perhaps even difficult at first. After all, as with anything you try for the first time, diamond painting requires a little practice and experience to achieve perfect results.
And a few helpful tips certainly can't hurt at the beginning, can they?
Tip 1 - Start with small projects
For diamond painting beginners, it is better not to choose a picture that is too large to begin with. Because even if motifs on a large canvas are particularly detailed and therefore appear more vivid, a large motif can quickly be overwhelming for beginners, especially if they have little or no practice. Instead of quick successes that inspire you, you can easily feel frustrated because you get the impression that you are not making any progress and that there is no end in sight despite hours of work.
To ensure that you don't lose interest in your first diamond painting and that your first project also remains your last project, it is best to start with a motif that is not too large and only gradually move on to larger motifs. Holding a finished work of art in your hands, no matter how big or small, is a beautiful and satisfying feeling and this sense of achievement makes you proud and should be experienced as often as possible, especially at the beginning. In our Diamond Painting Shop, we therefore also have a large selection of small but fine Diamond Painting Sets that are perfect for beginners.
Tip 2 - First round then square
Diamond Painting Sets are available with either round or square stones. If you only want to buy sets with a certain stone shape, pay attention to which stone shape is specified in the description.
Motifs with round stones are particularly suitable for beginners for various reasons.
First of all, round stones are much easier and therefore quicker to lay, as they need to be placed less precisely and accurately than square diamond stones. Due to their shape, they also forgive many a beginner's mistake when setting them. If round stones are not placed absolutely correctly, this is much less noticeable than if square stones are placed imprecisely, as there is always a little bit of the canvas visible around the individual round stones, meaning that it is not necessary to work with a perfect fit.
In addition, round stones with a diameter of 2.8 mm are slightly larger than square stones, which have an edge length of 2.5 mm. Therefore, fewer stones need to be set in diamond pictures with round stones, which also helps to complete a picture more quickly.
For all diamond painting beginners and newcomers who want to familiarize themselves with the basic technique of diamond painting and want to get started in a relaxed and stress-free manner and achieve a quick sense of achievement, we recommend starting with round stones. Incidentally, we have designed our Carat Cuties sets especially for beginners. In extra small sizes, with round stones and for that special wow effect, you can also find these sets with particularly glittering AB stones or noctilucent stones in our Diamond Painting Shop.
Tip 3 - Fun before perfection
Diamond painting is a hobby that should be fun and relaxing and where you can express yourself creatively. Creativity and perfectionism do not go well together, because while creativity is a process that should make you forget about space, time and details, perfectionism keeps you from being able to express yourself freely. Apart from that, perfectionism is an illusion anyway, which only keeps you from the essential, which is to enjoy doing something without fear, without self-doubt and without judgment. So forget perfectionism and just have fun. Enjoy the process, enjoy what you are doing and enjoy being creative. Over time and with enough practice, setting diamonds will become easier and easier and you will see that you will achieve more even and perfect results and your Diamonds Paintings will become more and more beautiful. And until then, let me tell you that even crooked stones, incorrectly placed colors or a stone that is not perfectly shaped are not a downfall, but rather give your painting an individual touch.
Tip 4 - Tool upgrade
With good and functional Diamond Painting accessories, working on your pictures is much more fun and you can also achieve better results with special tools. That's why it makes sense to treat yourself to a little tool upgrade from time to time.
Whether you use diamond painting stencils to place your stones perfectly and straight, ergonomic pens to help you work in a relaxed and fatigue-free manner or an LED light pad to protect your eyes while working, all these accessories will help you to make diamond painting even easier and more effortless and have more fun with your hobby. At the same time, your results will automatically improve with special accessories and this progress will inspire you and spur you on to future diamond painting projects.
Tip 5 - Exchange ideas with others
Once you have experienced how much fun painting with diamonds is and the positive effects this hobby has on your life, you will not want to do without this leisure activity. Regardless of whether it helps you to deal better with stress or anxiety, whether it is the creative relaxation and the manual activity that do you good or whether you can escape the hectic everyday life particularly successfully with diamond painting. These aspects have certainly contributed to the fact that you have fallen for the diamond painting fever and the fascination of diamond painting.
To gain more experience and further expand your knowledge and skills as a painting artist, it can be very helpful and useful to exchange ideas with other people who also love this hobby. Advice from experienced painters can be very valuable, especially if you have a lot of questions at the beginning or don't know exactly whether you are doing everything right. For this reason, it makes sense to look for other friends of this great hobby on the Internet. You can find them on many social networks such as Instagram or Facebook and there are also useful videos on YouTube with lots of tips and tricks about diamond painting.

Tip 6 - Practice makes perfect
What looks so easy and effortless for experienced painters may not be quite so easy when you try it for the first time or may even go wrong. Anyone who enjoys this hobby knows from experience that a lot can go wrong at the beginning, even with diamond painting. For example, picking up the stones with the diamond painting pen only works if the tip of the pen has been pierced into the wax beforehand and anyone who forgets or doesn't know this can almost despair when picking up the stones. Many people also report that they did not realize at first that the wax plate is protected against drying out and soiling by a transparent film and if this film is not removed beforehand, the wax cannot be picked up. Many a mishap can also happen when handling the stones. Either the diamond stones in the bowl simply don't want to turn to the right side straight away or you accidentally shake the bowl too much and the stones bounce over the edge and scatter everywhere. If you mix up the symbols while working, you stick the wrong pebbles on the canvas and when you realize it, they have to come off again, but what is the best way to do this?
All this and much more can happen, especially at the beginning, and it's important to remember that everyone does or has done this. As a beginner, it's normal that not everything goes smoothly straight away, that you make mistakes, don't know something or find it difficult at first. This can happen with any new activity and it is important that you don't immediately think that everyone else can do it much better and that there is no point in continuing to try, but that you don't give up and try again.
Always remember that even the most practiced DP artist started out as a beginner and made mistakes. Making mistakes and practicing are part of the game and only those who make mistakes learn and get better.
And as the saying goes: No master has ever fallen from the sky... and certainly no diamond picture master!
